BACKBENCHERS Club chairman Datuk Shahrir Samad has been appointed the new Public Accounts Committee chairman, replacing Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Ramli Ngah Talib.

Shahrir's appointment came about following a motion passed in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.

The motion was tabled by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz and supported by Internal Security Ministry parliamentary secretary Datuk Abu Seman Yusop.

Opposition Leader Lim Kit Siang, who supported the appointment, said the committee should be respected and feared by the entire government, including frontbenchers.

In jest, Shahrir replied: “With a small body like this, who will fear me”.

The Dewan Rakyat meeting ended last night after having sat for 41 days.
