Fans and a van is our wish

PENANG: Living in a metal container with two other people can be hot and stuffy, especially if the ventilation fan and wall fans are not functioning.

The 36 residents of Relau Rumah Charis Home for Senior Citizens live three-to-a-room in containers that have been converted into cabins and almost all of them have faulty fans.

“Now that the ventilation fan in my room has conked out, it can get quite stuffy, especially on warm days and nights,” said resident Anna Yong.

Fellow resident Koong Wei Hoong added that in some of the containers, there was only one wall fan in working condition and the fan had to be set on oscillating mode so that all three residents could benefit from it.

IN NEED: Relau Rumah Charis Home for Senior Citizens resident Koong Wei Hoong (standing) keeping himself busy by arranging files at one of the home's halls which requires ceiling fans, part of their wish list.

Home coordinator Shalom Hii said that each container used to have a ventilation fan and two wall fans but some of these electrical fixtures had malfunctioned through the years.

As part of the When You Wish Upon The Star festive wish campaign, the home is asking for 10 new ventilation and 15 wall fans from donors.

Hii also requested good quality fans that would last. “It is disheartening to get a new fan only to have it malfunction within months. It then has to be replaced.”

The home also needs about 10 ceiling fans for its halls, a new grass-cutting machine, two units of 40-litre water boilers, 30-litre stainless steel water containers for storage of drinking water, and eight units of water heaters for the bathrooms.

“We also need a small van to take residents to the hospital for treatment or check-up. We have two vans that can accommodate about 14 people but using such big vans is not economical for taking one or two residents at a time,” said Hii.

“The small one that we have now, an eight-seater, is in bad shape – the brake is faulty, the seat belts are worn out, and the seats are torn.”

Those who wish to contact Relau Rumah Charis can do so at Tel no: 04-643-8689. The home is located at Lot 29, off Jalan Paya Terubong, Mukim 10, Relau, 11900 Penang.
