SYED MOKHTAR WINS: (Dec 3) Business tycoon Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Albukhary received the Government's nod for the prized 15.8% stake in DRB-Hicom Bhd. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said the Government favoured Syed Mokhtar's bid based on his higher offer of RM3.60 per share against Tan Sri SM Nasimuddin SM Amin's RM3.50. The next issue is whether the dispute over the ownership structure of the 15.8% block of shares can be ironed out before the sale and purchase agreement with Syed Mokhtar goes through.
HUNT FOR ILLEGALS: (Nov 30) Come January, a massive hunt will get underway to nab illegal immigrants still in the country. Home Minister Datuk Azmi Khalid said the combined force of some 560,000 Rela and Rukun Tetangga members, who would be roped in after the end of the amnesty period, would help immigration officers and the police to flush out the immigrants. With a ratio of one enforcement officer to two illegal foreign workers, the Government was confident the upcoming exercise to nab illegal immigrants would succeed, he said.
