Rais questions costly films

ARTISTIC movies like the epic Puteri Gunung Ledang should cost only between RM1.1mil and RM1.2mil, Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said.

The Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister said such movies should not cost more than that, according to Finas’ estimation.

Replying to several comments from MPs on the cost of making the RM20mil movie, he said, “I cannot answer that question. The movie is produced by the private sector and (maybe) they like to spend that kind of money.”

During the debate on the Youth and Sports Ministry, several MPs called for the ministry to be split to give equal emphasis to youth and sports development.

Idris Harun (BN – Tangga Batu) said it was worrying that the majority of occupants in the country's 48 drug rehabilitation centres or Pusat Serenti were youths.

Datuk Bung Moktar Radin (BN – Kinabatangan) felt that the ministry has no focus, adding: “I think the ministry does not pay attention to either sports or youth as I think the development of these two aspects are not successful. In sports, we lose, and our youths are involved in drug abuse.”
