KUANTAN: A man, who claimed to have accidentally shot dead his brother-in-law while on a deer-hunting trip, and four others have been arrested to help police investigate what is now classified as murder.

Police intend to exhume the body of Mokhtar Jali, 44, a smallholder from Jempol, Negri Sembilan, who died on Monday during the hunting trip and was buried on Tuesday, said state criminal investigation department chief Asst Comm Ahmad Noordin Ahmad Mustafa.

“The brother-in-law said he thought he saw a deer and fired. But upon checking, he saw the deceased instead who had died on the spot,” said ACP Ahmad Noordin at his office here yesterday.

“The brother-in-law then went to get three friends to help bring back the body home,” he said. They did not lodge a police report.

A villager alerted the police after seeing a gunshot wound while helping to bathe and dress the body for burial.
