IPOH: Wanita DAP has written to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and the Cabinet to consider appointing a woman of good calibre to be Dewan Rakyat Speaker in a bid to enhance the image of the Malaysian Parliament.

Its national secretary Teresa Kok said the appointment of a woman Speaker of Parliament has been practised in many countries in the world such as Britain, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa and the Scandinavian nations.

“Should Malaysia appoint a woman to be Parliament speaker, we will be the first country in the Asean region to have a woman Speaker.

“This will not only enhance the status of women in our society, but will also elevate the image of the Malaysian Parliament in the international community,” she said in a statement handed out to the press at the State Secretariat building yesterday, where she was one of the seven-member team of the Parliament Select Committee.

Teresa, who is also Seputeh MP, said a having a woman Speaker at the Dewan Rakyat would reduce verbal sexual harassment of women MPs.
