KUALA LUMPUR: An afternoon fire swept through several wooden factories and six squatter houses in Jalan Kuchai Lama yesterday, leaving nine families homeless.
A Perodua Kancil was also destroyed.
The 1.45pm fire fanned by strong winds spread rapidly through the area, forcing the victims to scurry away without taking any of their belongings.
No casualties were reported but a dog, which was trapped for over an hour before firemen rescued it, suffered minor burns.
Cheow Sai Kit, 28, who ran a noodle factory, said the fire spread too fast and he could only run for his life.
“I asked my six workers not to rescue anything, but to just run,” he added.
Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Ruzain Jaafar said fire engines from Sungai Besi, Jalan Klang Lama and Jalan Pantai were sent to the scene after the department received a distress call at 1.56pm. He said they managed to control the fire about 20 minutes later.
He added that the cause of fire was being investigated.
Khong Chee Seng, special assistant to Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, said the victims were now staying at a nearby community hall.
