THE price of commercial gas has increased by 20% in recent months, said Nanyang Siang Pau.

Quoting traders, the daily reported that for every 50kg cylinder, the price had increased to RM120 from RM100.

Factories, restaurants and hotels mostly use the gas cylinders.

Sin Chew Daily reported that from next year, the contract to operate school canteens in Penang would be under the purview of the district education office.

The state education department had informed all schools on this through a circular signed by state Education director Datuk Dawa Abdullah.

The department told school heads that they would no longer be allowed to renew the contracts of their canteen operators when the contracts expire on Dec 31.

In another report, the daily quoted Consumers Association of Penang president S.M. Mohd Idris as alleging that the death rates of patients in private hospitals were high and urged the Government to investigate the matter.

China Press reported that a nun in Kuala Lumpur was alleged to have tortured four siblings who were placed in a temple.

The siblings, aged between four and 11 years, had stayed at the temple for a year after their parents divorced.
