IPOH: Umno should not see the release of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as a threat to the party or as a “zero sum” game where someone's gain is another's loss, said DAP chairman Lim Kit Siang.

He described the Federal Court’s decision to acquit the former deputy premier of sodomy charges as the most significant event in the 10-month leadership of Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Lim said it gave form and shape to Abdullah’s pledge that he would respect the separation of powers among the legislature, executive and judiciary to maintain check and balance and prevent abuse of power.

The acquittal also indicated the restoration of an independent judiciary system, he said when opening the 14th DAP national congress here yesterday.

It gave hope that Malaysia could restore national and international confidence, he added.

“It is good for human rights, democracy, good governance and the fundamental principle of the separation of powers of the three branches of government,” Lim said.
