PETALING JAYA: Georges Bizets Carmen, arguably the most famous opera of them all, is coming to Malaysia at the end of the year.
The Penang Arts Council, in conjunction with the Texchem Group of Companies, will present five performances of Carmen in December.
The opera features award-winning Taiwanese soprano Jessica Chen as the wilful gypsy Carmen, whose romantic dalliances end in tragedy. Starring alongside her will be British tenor Justin Lavender as Carmens soldier lover Don Jose, as well as American baritone Stephen Owen and local soprano Cecilia Yap.
The performers will be backed by the 70-piece National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Robert Casteels. Two choirs, one comprising 50 adults and the other 25 children, will also perform.
The show will be directed by Swiss director Alain Laurent Wullscheleger, who will be directing his sixth production for the Penang Arts Council.
Carmen will be staged at the Dewan Sri Pinang in Penang on Dec 10 and 11, and at the Istana Budaya, Kuala Lumpur from Dec 17 to 19.Tickets will be on sale from October.
