Bus driver faces reckless driving charge

TAIPING: The driver of the express bus which was involved in a road accident that killed four people including two foreign women, was charged with reckless driving at a magistrate’s court here. 

Abdul Khalid Harun, 45, from Tampoi in Johor, claimed trial to driving fast and recklessly without giving consideration to road conditions and traffic volume. 

He is alleged to have caused the death of freelance reporter Sulaiman Abdullah @ Yeoh Gim Hoe, 71, of Kuala Lumpur; Tiang Bik Hun, 25, of Sitiawan; Indonesian Ramayani Rachman, 29; and Sudan national Suhair Hassan Ali Ahmad, 27, who was a Universiti Sains Malaysia student. 

The accident happened on Aug 15 at about 3.30am at Km256.9 of the North-South Expressway near Kuala Kangsar. 

The charge under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 carries a jail term of between two and 10 years, and a fine of between RM5,000 and RM20,000, if convicted. 

Magistrate Mohd Kafli Che Ali set bail at RM5,000. 

Abdul Khalid was detained at the Kuala Kangsar court lock-up as he could not post bail.
