From the Tamil Press

Malaysia NANBAN and Tamil Nesan front-paged the story that the New York City Council had named a road after astronaut Kalpana Chawla, who died in the explosion of the Columbia space shuttle in February last year.

The dailies reported New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg as saying that Kalpana had a place in the history of the United States and India, adding that people who did not know her would take interest when they used this road.

Kalpana died with six other astronauts in the incident.

Tamil Nesan reported Lunas assemblyman S. Ganasan as saying that SJK (T) Ladang Wellesly in Lunas, Kedah, will have a new RM1mil block to replace the old one.

The daily quoted Ganasan as saying that MIC president and Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu had told him that the Government had allocated RM700,000 for the new building and had also directed him to raise RM300,000 for the project.

He said that he had raised RM100,000 and was still collecting money for the fund, adding that Samy Vellu would be invited for the ground breaking ceremony when the total amount was collected at the end of the year.

Ganasan, who is also the Kedah MIC secretary, said this after the closing of the state-level talent quiz for Tamil schools at SJK (T) Kulim on Monday.

In another development, the daily reported that the residents of Kampung Ampar Tenang near Sepang, Selangor, would a have a community hall soon.

It said the RM750,000 hall was about 90% completed and would serve the needs of the community in the area.

It added that Sepang MP Datuk Mohd Zin Mohamad, who is also the Deputy Works Minister, visited the area recently to check that the work was progressing on schedule.
