KUALA LUMPUR: Some 97% of calls to the Civil Defence Department's toll-free line 991 are prank calls – many from lonely women looking for companionship.

Until May this year, 214,976 of the 221,522 calls to the number were prank calls, and the Government has to bear the charges (to Telekom) amounting to at least RM64,000 considering that each call costs 30 sen.
