IPOH: Only five of the 24 Umno division chief posts in Perak will see contests, said state Umno liaison committee chairman and Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Tajol Rosli Ghazali.
He said the five divisions where contests would take place during the meeting from July 5 to 22 were Teluk Intan, Tanjung Malim, Sungai Siput, Pasir Salak and Taiping.
One of those keenly followed is the Pasir Salak division where Kampong Gajah state assemblyman Datuk Tajuddin Abd Rahman will make a second attempt to unseat incumbent Tan Sri Ramli Ngah Talib, the former Deputy Transport Minister and Perak Mentri Besar.
Of the 19 division chiefs who won unopposed, two were new faces. They were Perak Youth chief Datuk Dr Zambry Abd Kadir who won the Lumut post after incumbent Datuk Wajidi Ishak failed to secure the required 20% nomination for a contest.
The other was state Rural Development Committee chairman Datuk Saarani Mohamad in the Lenggong division.
Speaking after chairing the state liaison committee meeting on Wednesday, Tajol Rosli advised party members of the five divisions where contests would be held to ensure that the election process was carried out in a “family-like” spirit.
On contests in the party wings, Tajol Rosli said the Youth and Puteri would see contests in seven divisions while eight incumbent Wanita division chiefs would be facing a contest.
