PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia hopes the early transfer of sovereignty from the Coalition Provisional Authority to the interim government in Iraq will lead to the restoration of dignity to the Iraqis.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, in welcoming the move, said it was a very important day in Iraq’s history.

“Malaysia expresses its best wishes to the people of Iraq and hopes that peace and stability will prevail throughout the country so that the transition process can be completed on schedule without interruption.

“It is necessary, therefore, that normalcy must return to Iraq as soon as possible,” he said after chairing the meeting of the Langkawi Development Authority (Lada) board of directors at his offices yesterday.

Stating that Malaysia firmly believed the United Nations had an important role to play in the reconstruction of the country, Abdullah expressed hope that the interim government in Iraq would engage the world body in ways that will benefit its people.

The United States handed over sovereignty to the interim Iraqi Government two days earlier than scheduled in a low-key ceremony on Monday.
