KUCHING: The Sarawak Saree Queen beauty pageant here next month will have an international flavour as two Nigerian nationals are among the 15 finalists.

The Nigerians are students at Inti College Sarawak. The other finalists include one from Negri Sembilan and several from smaller towns in the state.

The pageant on July 17 is hosted by the Sarawak United People’s Party Batu Lintang branch Indian Affairs Bureau to promote Indian culture and cultural integration.

Bureau chief Lucy Lingam said the finalists would be “adopted” by Indian families to help groom and train them for the event.

The Saree Queen will win RM2,000, a sponsored diploma course at IBMS College and other prizes. The first and second runners-up will get RM1,000 and RM500 respectively.

Branch chairman Chan Seng Khai, who is also Batu Lintang assemblyman and city south mayor, said dinner tickets to the grand finals would be priced at RM2,000 and RM1,000 per table for 10 people. Part of the proceeds will go to charity.
