PONTIAN: A chance meeting with Barisan Nasional leaders has lifted the spirits of vegetable seller Masnah Mohd Yatim, who can now look forward to better living conditions, thanks to her Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting.

She met the Housing and Local Government Minister, who was accompanying Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman during his visit to the Tanjong Piai constituency, at the Pekan Nanas wet market on Thursday.

Masnah, 62, and her handicapped son Mohd Soib Tamin, 20, approached the leaders and told them of her plight of having to fend for her family with only RM120 a month.

The mother of three, who had one of her legs amputated years ago due to an illness, sells vegetables grown in her garden once a week at the Pekan Nanas wet market and earns about RM30 per week.

Her son, who is enrolled at a rehabilitation centre for the handicapped in town, can only attend classes once a month as she cannot afford his RM14 per trip taxi fare.

To add to their problems, Masnah's husband, odd-job labourer Tamin Jayar, 64, is often too sick to work and their house in Kampung Pengkalan Raja is in a sad state with the roof leaking badly.

Ong donated RM1,000 for Masnah to repair the roof while Pekan Nanas assemblyman Wee Jeck Seng promised to send officers to visit her to find out other forms of help needed by the family.

“Once we have gathered the information, I will submit it to the minister for further action,” Wee said.
