BUTTERWORTH: The Customs Department is on the alert for the smuggling of firecrackers as it believes that smugglers are bringing in the items months before the festive period to avoid detection.

This follows the seizure of 1,032 cartons of firecrackers valued at RM490,000 by Customs officers and the Penang Port Sdn Bhd auxiliary police at the North Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT) last Monday.
