KUANTAN: Malaysian fishermen have been paying protection money to pirates in the Straits of Malacca for safe fishing certificates, a Fisheries Department official said.
The departments Protection of Resources branch chief, Abdullah Jaafar, said fishermen were forced to pay between RM300 and RM400 every month to the pirates to be allowed to fish safely.
