KOTA TINGGI: Johor's most popular beach Desaru, located some 100km from here, will be developed into an international water sports centre in line with efforts to promote the country as a sports tourism destination.

Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Azalina Othman Said said the long, unpolluted and unspoilt white sandy beach of Desaru fitted the criteria for a water sports centre.

She said the fact that Desaru had already established itself as a favourite beach spot in the region would help to “sell” the centre in Europe and America.

“For a start, the Government has set aside an allocation to build a bridge across Sungai Johor to shorten travelling time between Desaru and Johor Baru by more than half.

“I have also arranged several meetings with the state government to discuss other infrastructures that need upgrading, including the all-important communication facilities,” she said after launching the Saske Desaru Weststar Golf championship in Desaru.

“I was disappointed that most foreign participants of the Desaru Triathlon opted to stay in Singapore simply because of lack of some facilities,” she said.
