KUANTAN: Ten national service trainees were detained by the district police in connection with the alleged assault of another trainee at a camp in Sungai Semuji.

Kuantan OCPD Asst Comm Khalid Abu Bakar said one of the suspects was the roommate of the victim, Faizul Ahmad, 18, who is from Felda Keratong 2.

ACP Khalid said the suspects were detained at 2am yesterday, a day after the victim was assaulted in his room.

ACP Khalid said Faizul was approached by his roommate and asked whether he had found the latter's handphone.

When Faizul said he did not know where the handphone was, his roommate went out, returned with nine other trainees and began searching the room.

UNDER INVESTIGATION: The national service trainees suspected of assaulting a fellow trainee at the Sungai Semuji camp being taken to the Kuantan district police station on Friday.

ACP Khalid said that according to the report lodged by Faizul, the suspects then ransacked his belongings and found the handphone under Faizul’s bed.

He said the 10 trainees attacked Faizul by punching and kicking him.

“Faizul received several bruises on his face and body. He later lodged a report at the Gambang police station at 5.45pm on Thursday,” he said.

ACP Khalid said the suspects would be charged with rioting.

Last week, five national service trainees at the Jengka Universiti Teknologi Mara hostel in Maran were released on bail after a trainee was assaulted by 10 other trainees and two trainers.

The assault was believed to have occurred after the victim wanted to hand over a stolen handphone cover and RM50 in compensation to another trainee.
