BUY AND RENT: (April 11) The Selangor government planned to allow rich people to buy low-cost houses and rent them out to the poor under a system that would also help housing developers reduce losses. Currently, low-cost houses in the state are sold at between RM35,000 and RM42,000 to those who earn less than RM1,500 a month. The plan was opposed by the Cabinet, however. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said the cause of the problem of low-cost houses remaining unsold should be studied to enable the low-income group to own houses.
ZERO URBAN POOR: (April 10) The Government is setting up a think-tank to draw up action plans and integrated programmes to wipe out urban poverty in five years’ time. Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting said the think-tank would comprise non-governmental organisations and professionals who could provide input on how to deal with urban poverty.
