IPOH: A hundred students from SMK Jalan Pasir Puteh here will take part in the inaugural Ipoh Starwalk 2004, thanks to the sponsorship by Jennifer Liau, an executive director of car paint distributor Lean Seng Heng (M) Sdn Bhd.

Liau, who is also the Ipoh Love and Care Society president, said she wanted to help reduce social problems and gangsterism in schools.

“We should promote interest in sports among students so that they will stay away from unhealthy activities,” she said.

“I chose to sponsor the students from SMK Jalan Pasir Puteh to encourage them to take part in sports and to let them know that they too can compete with students from premier schools in the city,” added Liau, who would be paying for their registration fees.

Principal Chua Tong Guan said he appreciated Liau's good gesture.

“We want our students to excel not only in their studies but also to take an interest in co-curriculum activities,” he said.

Touted as the largest sporting event in Perak, the walk will be held in conjunction with the 76th birthday celebrations of the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah, on April 25.

The Raja Muda of Perak, Raja Nazrin Shah, will flag off the walk at Dataran Ipoh at 7am.

Participants stand to win over RM50,000 worth of lucky draw prizes that include three Suzuki Smash motorcycles, four Solarela solar water heaters, RM10,000 worth of Pensonic electrical products, a RM3,000 Super Kinta giant hamper and 15 DiGi mobile phones.

The Ipoh City Council's D' Bougainvillaea cultural troupe will put up a Starwalk variety show and Mix FM's radio deejays will also entertain walkers and their families.

The walk is organised by The Star and endorsed by the Perak government and Ipoh City Council with Suzuki, DiGi, Pensonic, 100 Plus, Spritzer, Sloan's, Pallas, Solarela, Mix FM and My FM as its main sponsors.

Registration forms are available in The Star newspaper and at its Ipoh office at 39, Jalan Hussein.

The entry fee is RM5.

The closing date for registrations is April 12.
