JOHOR BARU: The swearing-in of the Johor Mentri Besar will be held early next week, said state Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman.

He said that besides the Mentri Besar, the new state executive councillors would also be sworn in on the same day.

“The exact date of the swearing-in ceremony will be announced later,” he said in a three-paragraph statement issued here yesterday.

Abdul Ghani, who is also state Umno liaison chief and incumbent Mentri Besar, said he had an audience with Sultan of Johor Sultan Iskandar on Monday to officially inform the ruler of Barisan’s victory in the general election.

While it remained unclear whether Abdul Ghani would be reappointed as Mentri Besar, the exco line-up would definitely see five new faces after four former exco members were dropped from the elections while one more contested a parliamentary seat.

Those who did not contest were Adam Abdul Hamid, Datuk Jimmy Low, Salikon Sarpin and Hamzah Ramli. State MCA liaison chief Datuk Dr Chua Soi Lek contested the Labis parliamentary seat.

The state exco line-up has seven members, and three of those who were retained in the elections were Datuk Halimah Mohamed Sadique, Osman Jais and Samat Arripin.

The state is also expected to get a new Speaker after incumbent Datuk Zainal Abidin Zin did not contest.
