TAMIL Nesan and Malaysia Nanban in their editorials lauded Barisan Nasional’s landslide victory in the just concluded general election, saying that the fall of Terengganu to the coalition was a great achievement for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
Tamil Nesan said election results showed that the people had endorsed Abdullah’s leadership, policies and approach towards issues.
“The people are confident that only the Barisan can bring development to the nation and ensure lasting peace and harmony,” the daily said.
It also commended MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu for the party’s 100% victory in the elections, adding that the party had fielded a good choice of candidates.
The daily added that the victory reflected the people’s endorsement of the party’s services to the Indian community.
Malaysia Nanban reminded Barisan to be cautious against the opposition’s new strategies and tactics to recapture Terengganu in the next elections.
The daily also urged the Election Commission to rectify problems that surfaced during polling day on Sunday and to ensure that such hiccups do not recur in future polls.
In another development, Malaysia Nanban quoted Penang Gerakan secretary Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan as commending the daily for its efforts in restoring the confidence of Indians in the party.
Dr Teng added that the election results showed that the anti-Gerakan wave among the Indians in Penang had come to an end.
“At the eleventh hour some unknown persons tried to stir up the feelings of Indians against us through the Short Messaging Service. However, they failed to influence the Indians in the state,” the daily quoted him as saying.
