KUANTAN: Foul language or derogatory remarks which can mar the image and integrity of a candidate contesting in the general election must be reported to the Election Observers team set up by the Election Commission, Information Minister Tan Sri Khalil Yaakob said.

He said actions or words which breached the Election Offences Act must be reported immediately as they could hinder the smooth running of the coming elections.

The commission had its own system to monitor adherence to the dos and don’ts on nomination day and during the campaigning period, he said.

He said the commission has warned that ceramahs or campaigns could be stopped if the organisers or speakers are found to have violated provisions under the Act.

During campaigning, priority should be given to highlighting party policies and struggles and not to tarnishing the image and integrity of a candidate, he said after attending the annual dinner of the Kin Kee Group of Companies at the Gebeng Industrial Estate on Saturday night.

Khalil said the problem of not having “political capital” in the campaign did not arise as the conditions were specified by the commission. – Bernama
