JOHOR BARU: Several bank customers foiled an attempted bank robbery by a man in Taman Permas Jaya yesterday, by overpowering him and preventing him from fleeing until the police arrived.

In the 2.30pm incident, the 34-year-old robber from Kampung Baru Plentong, entered the bank armed with a 15cm-long kitchen knife.

Johor Baru (South) OCPD SAC II Hashim Yusof said the suspect threatened the bank security guard with the knife as he tried to grab the guard’s pump gun but failed.

“Panicking, the suspect then grabbed one of the bank staff, who was seated at the customer service desk and held her hostage,” said SAC II Hashim at the scene here yesterday.

It was learnt that when the suspect wielded the knife, the bank staff shouted for help and several male customers who were at the back portion of the bank heard the commotion and came to the front to see what was happening.

A source said the robber was holding on to 24-year-old Roslina Sarkam and threatened to stab her if anyone went near him.

The source said more than 10 men surrounded him and asked him to let the girl go when he suddenly stabbed the girl.

“She screamed and fell to the floor and the men pounced on the robber,” he said.

He said some of the men started hitting and punching the robber with their bare hands while others attacked him with whatever they could get their hands on like the bank’s metal rubbish bin.

After overpowering the robber who was bleeding badly, they tied him up.

The police and an ambulance arrived half-an-hour later and the robber was taken to Hospital Sultanah Aminah.

SAC II Hashim said Roslina was stabbed on her right thigh and slashed on her right arm. She had been sent to the Johor Specialist Hospital.

“We are trying to determine if there had been a second man in the robbery,” he said.

Those with information are to contact the Plentong police station at 07- 387 3122 or the nearest police station.
