Eric Chia claims trial to CBT amounting to RM76.4mil

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Perwaja Steel Sdn Bhd managing director Tan Sri Eric Chia Eng Hock claimed trial at the Sessions Court here today with misappropriating RM76.4mil from Perwaja Rolling Mill and Development Sdn Bhd. 

He is alleged to have committed the offence on Feb 18,1994 at Level 13, Menara UBN at No 10, Jalan P. Ramlee.  

According to the charge, Chia had dishonestly authorised a payment of RM76.4m to the account of Frilsham Enterprise Incorporated with the American Express Bank Limited Hong Kong for technical assistance provided by NKK Corporation Japan for the "beam and section mill plant project" in Gurun, Kedah, when in fact no such payment was due to the said NKK Corporation. 

He was charged under Section 409 of the Penal Code for criminal breach of trust.Judge Akhtar Tahir fixed the whole of August for trial.

He also fixed bail at RM2mil and ordered Chia to surrender his travel documents.  

After counsel Datuk Muhammad Shafee Abdullah produced Chia's title for a house worth RM2.6mil as bail, he was released. Chia left for his home in Section 14 in Petaling Jaya at about 12.15pm. 

Attorney-General Tan Sri Gani Patail led the prosecution team. ACA Director-General Datuk Zulkipli Mat Nor was also present. 

Chia, who had spent the night at the Putrajaya Hospital since his arrest at 3.45pm yesterday, arrived in an ambulance escorted by police at about 10am. He was wheeled into the court at 10.45am.
