PETALING JAYA: The stampede that left 244 people dead during a devil-stoning ritual in Mena on Sunday happened due to some large pilgrim groups pushing their way to the front, said Malaysian Haj delegation head Datuk Dr Azmi Ahmad yesterday.
“Many also slept on the streets and brought their luggage with them, which caused people to stumble and fall and get trampled upon,” he said.
