THE outbreak of bird flu in this region has, unfortunately, a very familiar ring to it. Comparisons with the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), Nipah and, most recently, Fujian flu outbreaks are unavoidable.
Firstly, the avian influenza like SARS and the other diseases is frightening in that not much is known about the illness except that a virus causes it and there is no known cure.
