KUALA LUMPUR: Residents of Kampung Medan in Jalan Kelang Lama will get toll-free access roads before the New Pantai Expressway (NPE) opens next month.
Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said residents could use the existing road when they come out of their housing estates and make a U-turn before the toll plaza to go to Kuala Lumpur while another access road would lead to the Federal Highway.
“Those using the two roads will not have to pay any toll charges,” he said yesterday after presenting cash rewards to 364 Tamil school students who scored 7As in last year’s UPSR examinations.
Samy Vellu said the concessionaire had also been directed to construct an overhead ramp as soon as possible to allow the residents additional access to Kuala Lumpur.
“We have given the undertaking and the concessionaire will complete the ramp. It is a promise,” he said, adding that the cost would be borne by the concessionaire.
Aimed at alleviating traffic congestion on the Federal Highway and at Jalan Klang Lama, the RM1.2bil project had stalled several times since it started in 1986.
It was revived in 2001 when Road Builder Sdn Bhd took over the management of NPE Sdn Bhd.
The 19.6km highway runs from Subang Jaya through Taman Maju Jaya and Pantai Dalam before ending at Jalan Bangsar and Jalan Kuchai Lama.
