PENANG: The closer ties between MCA and Gerakan will help garner more votes for Barisan Nasional in the coming general election, state MCA chairman Wong Kam Hoong said.

“We hope to promote stronger co-operation with Gerakan in Penang to garner more support from all the rakyat and not only from the Chinese voters,” he said yesterday.

Wong, who is also Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry parliamentary secretary, described the joint Chinese New Year open house initiated by Penang MCA and Gerakan as a very good beginning for both parties to work more closely in the interest of Chinese community.

``This will further boost the relationship between MCA and Gerakan with other component parties of Barisan in the state,” he said.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was among 10,000 people who attended the inaugural joint Chinese New Year open house organised by Penang MCA and Gerakan at the Penang International Sports Arena (Pisa) on Friday.

Abdullah also attended a similar function jointly organised by Kepala Batas MCA and Gerakan divisions in Kepala Batas later in the afternoon.

Penang Gerakan secretary Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan said Gerakan welcomed co-operation with all component parties in Barisan.

“We need to foster closer relationship with all component parties to ensure Barisan receives strong support from the people.''
