PETALING JAYA: The much-awaited new import tariff and excise duty structure has turned out to be exactly as promised by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi where prices of motor vehicles have not become cheaper across the board.
The Government announced the reduction of import tariffs, to meet Asean Free Trade Area (Afta) requirements, to as low as 40% for imported vehicles assembled overseas but also imposed excise duty of between 30% and 100% on all imported cars to make up for the loss of revenue from the cut in import taxes.
