PETALING JAYA: Malaysia will join the worldwide search and rescue mission in Iran following Friday’s devastating earthquake in the country’s south-eastern city of Bam.
The provisional death toll in the disaster, which is said to have wiped out 65% to 70% of the city’s population, is 20,000 with more than 30,000 injured.
An emergency assessment team from Mercy Malaysia left last night while efforts are being made to also send its medical team there.
In the meantime, the Special Malaysian Disaster Relief and Rescue Team is awaiting a directive from the Prime Minister’s Office to join other international crews in the global relief operation. Malaysia is helping out with RM1.9mil in relief aid for the victims.
