IPOH: Police have detained a Rela member for allegedly using a shotgun to kill a contractor and injure the latter’s brother in Kuala Terla in Cameron Highlands yesterday.

The 51-year-old farmer was detained at the scene after he had opened fire at R. Jenathan, 23, and R. Murali Balan, 26, at 11.40am.

Jenathan was hit in the chest and died on arrival at Tapah Hospital, while Murali, who was hit in the shoulder, was admitted to the Ipoh Hospital.

Cameron Highlands deputy OCPD Asst Supt Hanafi Md Zain said before the shooting a motorcycle accident had occurred, involving the Rela man and either Jenathan or Murali in Kuala Terla town.

“Both men managed to settle the matter and went their separate ways,” he said, adding that police could not ascertain yet which of the brothers was riding the other motorcycle.

ASP Hanafi said minutes later the Rela man’s third-eldest brother rushed to his house to tell him that their second-eldest brother was being chased by Jenathan and Murali, both armed with parangs

He said they went back to the scene of the accident half a kilometre away to investigate.

He said Jenathan attacked the Rela man’s brother, and on seeing this the man opened fire with his Harrington shotgun.

At the same time, Murali also tried to attack and was also shot at, he added.

ASP Hanafi said the Rela man was detained at the scene.
