New phase in Japan-Asean ties

JAPANESE Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi will meet with the leaders of the Asean countries at a two-day summit in Tokyo starting today. It will be the third such bilateral meeting between a Japanese premier and Asean leaders. 

The previous two were between Takeo Fukuda and Noboru Takeshita with the Asean heads in Kuala Lumpur in 1977 and in Manila in 1987 respectively.
