KUCHING: Leaders from neighbouring Indonesia and Brunei are expected to attend the national-level Hari Raya open house at Padang Merdeka here on Dec 13.
The Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Raja Permaisuri Agong as well as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will attend the event, said state Tourism Minister Datuk Abang Johari Tun Openg.
The open house is expected to be the grandest and biggest of events held in conjunction with the state’s 40th year of independence.
The Ruby Jubilee celebrations, which kicked off in May, have featured several international, national and state events, with villages and districts running their own programmes.
Johari said the open house would be celebrated as “Hari Raya ala Sarawak”.
He said the crowd was expected to spill over to the Museum Garden, State Tourism Complex, Kuching waterfront and the Central Post Office Complex, where food would be laid out for those present.
“Forty caterers have been picked to prepare the food,” he said, adding that popular singer Siti Nurhaliza would perform at the event.
Abang Johari had on Friday night switched on the city’s decorative lights along the main roads following a traditional Malay lamp-lighting ceremony at Padang Merdeka.
He said more decorative lights would be put up along Jalan Mathies and Jalan Reservoir to create a festive mood for the Hari Raya bash.
