Last minute rush for boat rides

KUCHING: It was a big last-minute rush for many people as they boarded express boats here yesterday to return for the Hari Raya celebrations.

The wharf at Muara Tabuan was crowded with several hundred people, some arriving as early as 5am hoping to get seats for the boats bound for Sibu and Sebuyau, Sri Aman Division.

The only way to get to Sebuyau from here is by river.

Those without tickets had to be turned away, and some – who were to return to Sibu and other coastal towns and villages in the Rajang Basin in central Sarawak – opted to travel by road.

A big crowd was also seen at the bus terminal at Jalan Penrissen, where several bus companies were operating long-distance express bus services to various towns as far as Bintulu and Miri in the northern region.
