MIRI: The police are hunting for a group of at least four armed robbers, who are believed to be on the loose here.

Security here has also been heightened following a daring robbery at about 10am yesterday, when the group cornered a security truck in a crowded square, shot a security guard with a shotgun and grabbed a cache of money and a pump gun from the guard before escaping.

At least RM220,000 was taken from the truck, which was on its way to deliver the money to a bank.

The guard, who was shot on his abdomen, has been warded in the Miri general hospital. His condition is reported to be stable.

Senadin Assemblyman Lee Kim Shin called on the police to increase their presence in public places here.

“I will also urge the police to reassess the security situation here,” added Lee, who is political secretary to Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

As of yesterday afternoon, no arrests had been made.
