KEPALA BATAS: The recent floods that swept through northern Seberang Prai caused the Government and residents to suffer losses estimated at RM32.1mil.

District officer Datuk Abdul Ghani Ariffin said yesterday the floods had wreaked havoc, damaging roads, pump houses, the drainage system as well as farms, livestock and belongings.

He said 3,500 families suffered losses estimated at RM15mil, whereas farmers lost about RM6.1mil when their padi fields and vegetable farms were damaged in the floods.

HELPING THE NEEDY: Dr Hilmi presenting aid to flood victim Yahaya Ahmad at the Balik Pulau district office on Tuesday.

“Livestock and poultry farmers lost RM3mil when their cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, rabbits, chicken, quails and ducks perished.

“Those involved in the aquaculture industry suffered RM400,000 in losses when fish and prawns from 83 ponds escaped during the floods,” he said at a press conference here.

In the floods early this month, 15,000 people were evacuated to 63 relief centres. A recurrence last week forced 2,200 people to escape to higher grounds.

Abdul Ghani said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had instructed government agencies to immediately repair all damaged infrastructure.

He said the state government had also allocated about RM300,000 to be distributed to affected residents.

Later, district Puspanita (Wives of Civil Servants Association) chairman Tunku Sobra Tunku Aziz handed over hampers to residents in Kampung Jambatan Merdeka near Bumbung Lima.
