TAMIL Nesan has agreed with Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Hishammuddin Tun Hussein that the future of the nation will be badly affected if the drug abuse problem is not eradicated among the youth.

In its editorial, the daily said drug abuse was a serious social problem among the youth, adding that it continued to be a major dilemma as several programmes carried out by the Government to eradicate the problem had shown very little results.

It said the public should not think that it was the Government’s duty to eradicate the problem, noting that the public should not ignore their role in fighting the menace.

The daily added that all quarters should join hands to fight the problem, including opposition parties.

Studies had indicated that most drug addicts come from squatter areas, temporary housing and longhouse sites, the daily said, adding the problem was spreading fast among students.

The daily also urged youth organisations to identify the areas with drug addicts and carry out aggressive anti-drug campaigns.

Malaysia Nanban quoted Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Dr Shafie Mohd Salleh as saying that volunteer workers in non-governmental organisations (NGOs) should be more service-oriented and of good character.

It also reported Shafie as saying that the NGOs and volunteers had helped reduce the burden of the Government in serving the poor and the needy in the country.

He said this after handing over Deepavali aid to the less fortunate and old folks near Jenjarom in Selangor recently.
