BUKIT BERUNTUNG: Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo were among thousands who converged at the Deepavali open house hosted by MIC vice-president Datuk G. Palanivel here yesterday.
Dr Khir, who was accompanied by several Selangor state executive councillors, tried out the murukku, athiresam and laddu.
Earlier he also shook hands with over 20 inmates of Pusat Sinar Harapan in Kuala Kubu Baru who were invited by Palanivel, who is also the Deputy Rural Development Minister and MP for Hulu Selangor.
Among those at the open house were Indian High Commissioner to Malaysia Veena Sikri, Transport Minister Datuk Chan Kong Choy, Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Azmi Khalid, Umno vice-president Tan Sri Muhammad Muhammad Taib, Selangor executive councillors, Datuk Zainal Sakom, Datuk Ch'ng Toh Eng, and Datuk S. Sivalingam.
Dr Khir said the open house would provide an opportunity for the other races in the country to savour the various Indian delicacies.
Palanivel said the open house was held earlier as the fasting month for Muslims would start, two days after the Oct 24 festival.
