SEREMBAN: The Health Ministry will turn Alor Star Hospital into a northern referral hub for treatment of pre-invasive and gynaecological cancers by early next year.

Its parliamentary secretary S. Sothinathan said the gynae-oncology unit would be set up at the hospital to cater for patients from Kedah, Perlis, Penang and Perak.

“The only such unit in the country currently is in Kuala Lumpur and the ministry has decided to establish another one in the northern state to

increase awareness on ear-

ly treatment,” he said af-

ter opening a Figo Gynae-Oncology conference here yesterday.

Data obtained last year showed that 560 cases were recorded in the four northern states, of which 245 cases were cervical cancer, 105 were gestational trophoblastic disease and 102 were endometrial cancer, he said.
