KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia should pay more attention to the education and development of its human resources, said the Deputy Prime Minister's wife, Datin Paduka Seri Endon Mahmood.
According to the Statistics Department, children below 15 make up 33% of the Malaysian population last year and this number is growing, she said.
Those below the age of six numbered about four million, she said.
The Education Ministry plays a vital role in ensuring the quality and focus on early childhood education, she said at the launch of the Malaysian Childcare and Education Guide at the National Science Centre yesterday.
Her speech was read by Health Minister Datuk Chua Jui Meng.
Endon said the new guide was the first of its kind in the country and that it could help parents find out more about childcare and education.
She commended the ministry for ensuring that kindergartens have a high level of professionalism and standard.
Citing as an example the National Preschool Curriculum, which required kindergartens to comply with its standards by next year, she said it was aimed at providing a holistic, balanced and integrated curriculum.
