LANGKAWI: The Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace (Lima) 2003 exhibition here had a respite from the hot weather – rains poured the whole day.

This, however, did not put a damper on Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s schedule although demonstrations at Tanjung Malai and the aerial shows were cancelled.

The Prime Minister was at Porto Malai early in the morning to launch the Langkawi Yacht Registry. Also present was Transport Minister Datuk Chan Kong Choy.

Dr Mahathir then witnessed the signing of eight agreements, contracts and acceptance documents and three certificate presentations between several companies. He later toured the Lima '03 maritime exhibition before adjourning for lunch.

In the afternoon, he was at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre to continue with his tour of the aerospace segment of Lima 2003.

Arriving at about 3.30pm, Dr Mahathir walked the entire length of the mammoth hall, visiting almost 100 booths exhibiting defence products.

Again, many foreign and local participants, sensing that Dr Mahathir was making his last rounds at Lima 2003 as the prime minister, surged forward to shake his hands and take photographs with him.

Besides touring the exhibits, Dr Mahathir also held meetings with defence corporate leaders before heading back to Kampung Tok Senik resort here.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi took the opportunity to continue with his tour of the maritime exhibition before leaving for the aerospace exhibition, where he and Defence Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak witnessed the handing over of a letter of acceptance and offer for the purchase of 11 units of the A109 Agusta helicopters.
