THERE were 8,700 snatch-thefts and 703 rape cases reported in the first six months this year.
Selangor recorded 2,555 snatch-theft cases followed by Kuala Lumpur (2,146 cases), Johor (1,025 cases) and Penang (851 cases).
“Of the 703 rape cases, 83.8% has been solved,” the Home Ministry said in a written reply to Fong Po Kuan (DAP - Batu Gajah).
It said that Johor and Selangor each recorded 146 rape cases, followed by 63 in Kedah, 56 in Sabah, 50 in Sarawak, 40 in Kuala Lumpur and 36 in Pahang.
The police had increased its surveillance as part of short-term measures to curb the crimes and had trained more of its personnel to handle such cases.”The police have also co-operated with the private sector to hold seminars, workshops and talks to increase awareness on violence against women,” it said.
On another question, Finance Ministry parliamentary-secretary Hashim Ismail said the Government had built 30 units of Rumah Mesra Rakyat (RMR) worth RM1.2mil in Terengganu and Tioman island.
”Two hundred and seventy-seven more units worth RM11.08mil are being constructed and should be ready soon,” he told Lim Bee Kau (BN - Padang Serai).
Hashim said the RMR project was carried out through the RM100mil fund.
