Unit foils attempt to smuggle in Thai chicks

ALOR STAR: The Anti-Smuggling Unit (UPP) here foiled an attempt by three men to smuggle in 23,800 chicks from Thailand via the Malaysian-Thai border near Durian Burung, 65km from here, on Thursday. 

The chicks were found in a lorry, which was detained at 11.15pm inJalan Padang Sanai near the border by a UPP team led by Insp Sabaruddin Salleh. 

Kedah UPP commander Supt Abdul Rahim Ismail said the team was conducting surveillance in the area when they spotted the lorry, which was coming from the direction of Durian Burung.

He said the lorry driver and two attendants, aged between 41 and 51, were arrested. 

He said the offenders could be fined between RM50,000 and RM100,000, and jailed a maximum of three years if found guilty under the Customs Act. 

Supt Abdul Rahim said the chicks were priced at RM1.50 each in Malaysia compared to 80 sen in Thailand.
