KUALA LUMPUR: A pregnant woman from China, who was allegedly kept for prostitution, claimed she and two others had escaped and hijacked a taxi to get to MCA headquarters here in April, a Sessions Court was told yesterday.
MCA Public Services and Complaints Bureau head Michael Chong said the 23-year-old woman, who was then four months pregnant, was one of four women who came to his office on April 21 for help.
This pregnant woman told me she and two other friends managed to escape, hid in a taxi and hijacked the person who drove them and forced him to send them to the MCA, he said when questioned by DPP Stanley Augustin.
Chong, 55, said the two others were an 18-year-old girl and another woman who was sent back to China after she was found to have a valid passport.
The fourth woman was another 21-year-old Chinese national who was brought to his office by a good Samaritan named Edwin Chik Wong Yuen.
Chong was testifying at the trial of taxi driver Lim Choon Wai, 45, and his wife Chong Koon Lan, 43, who are jointly charged with detaining three Chinese national women aged between 18 and 23, for prostitution.
The couple are charged with committing the offence at Blok J-20, Rumah Panjang, Jinjang Utara, between 5pm on April 22 and 1am on April 24.
Chong said that later, he was informed that the women should be sent to the Dang Wangi police station as they did not have any valid documents.
The next day, I called up Chik and informed him about the development and he told me that one of the women had managed to call him via a hand phone, said Chong.
I called a hand phone number, registered in Chik's mobile, and a gentlemen told me that they (women) are now with Lim. I managed to call Lim who told me that he is providing shelter for them on behalf of the Chinese Embassy, he said.
I asked Lim to send the women back to see me on April 23 as I wanted to arrange air tickets for them but he failed to turn up. On April 24, I got a message from him via my hand phone that he was arrested.
The hearing continues today.
