Hadi: Ignorant Malays should not question us

KUALA TERENGGANU: PAS acting president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang has ticked off Malays who questioned PAS’ hudud laws relating to the sodomy of a wife by her husband.

These people lacked the necessary Islamic knowledge, probably as a result of western influence or mere ignorance, he said

The hudud laws, he said, touched on sodomy and illicit sexual intercourse between those who were not married to one another.

“If they are married, then sodomy or illicit sexual intercourse does not arise but this will be an offence under takzir laws (which is similar to the Penal Code),” he said.

He was referring to the storm which arose following reports that criminal laws enacted by the PAS government had implied that that it was not an offence for a man to sodomise his wife.

Speaking at a ceramah in Kampung Batin, Seberang Takir on Saturday, Hadi, who is Terengganu Mentri Besar, said it was improper for the media to seek the opinion of the man in the street on the sodomy issue.

Those interviewed might not be well aware of Islamic laws and so their replies could undermine a person’s faith or a person’s understanding of Islam, he said.

In his speech, Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat blamed the media for giving too much coverage on sodomy until it becomes major problem in the country.

He cited the case of a 16-year-old female student who was gang-raped and sodomised by six men in Johor Baru during a National Day outing.

He said the Malays in early days were unaware of sodomy but this became prominent during the Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim trial.

“When the newspapers report extensively on such vices, it results in people who previously do not have any knowledge of sodomy becoming more aware of the matter,” he said.

Other speakers at the ceramah were Parti Keadilan Nasional deputy youth chief Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and PAS Kuala Kedah MP Mohamad Sabu.
