Firemen’s annual battle with fires begin

KLANG: Fires raged continuously at several areas here, spewing thick smoke into the air that choked motorcyclists travelling along the affected roads.

Firemen have been battling the fires for the past few days in Kampung Johan Setia and Jalan Kebun but their work was hampered by insufficient water and personnel, and unrepentant farmers.

The hot weather makes the fires spread faster and farmers are said to have further aggravated the situation by conducting open burning.

“It is an annual battle for us every time the weather is hot. The farmers would conduct open burning in preparation for the next planting season,” said Andalas Fire and Rescue station chief Abdul Karim Ayob, adding that it would take days to put out the fires.

The Department of Environment had tried to educate the public to stop open burning “but this has been a tough job. Some of the farmers even chased the DOE officers with parang,” said Abdul Karim.
